What's new in our 'Stack (and beyond)
Although we're new to Substack, Craftsmanship is approaching its 10th year of publishing online. Here are just a few of our multimedia offerings—most of which are free of charge, and free of ads.
Dear Friends,
We’re excited to be part of this growing community, and delighted to see our fan base expanding here on Substack. If you’re a new subscriber (or just haven’t had a chance to visit in a while), here are some other Craftsmanship channels you may have missed:
Over on YouTube, we offer a rich collection of short, informal videos, a few podcasts, and several fully produced mini-documentaries. The short clip above features Nisga’a totem carver and craftsman Mike Dangeli, profiled in our latest full-length feature, “Breathing Lives into Wood,” by contributing editor Jeff Greenwald. (The story is available free of charge and free of ads on the Craftsmanship website).
Our free podcast includes many informative, entertaining audio stories and interviews—such as fan-favorite, “The Rise and Fall of Toy Theatre,” written by Garrett Eps and narrated by Goran Norquist. These recordings are available on our site or wherever you like to get your podcasts, including Apple and Spotify.
We’re still growing here on Substack and we’d love your feedback—along with your recommendations. What topics are you most interested in? Which other Substackers should we be reading and following? Please leave us a comment or shoot us an email, if you’re so inclined.
Throughout the month of April, we’ll continue to explore the relationship between artisans and their tools, in both our free and paid offerings—including another new episode of “The Secrets of Mastery.” More details can be found below; please stay tuned!
Thank you for reading and sharing our stories, for supporting our work with a paid subscription if you can, and for being part of the Craftsmanship community. We couldn’t do this without you.
Sincerely,
The Craftsmanship Team
ICYMI…

Listen to: "How Do Tools and Technology Affect Creativity?" with Gary Rogowski. The veteran woodworker returns to our podcast to discuss how the choices made around tools and technology influence not just the artisan’s final product, but the creative process.
“The Secrets of Mastery” is a premium feature for our paid subscribers here on Substack. If you haven’t already done so, you can upgrade your subscription for just $6/month, or $60/year, and get access to the whole series—including previous episodes—along with other new projects we have in the works. Thank you for supporting independent journalism!
Coming soon…
This Friday’s featured story will continue to explore how tools can influence and expand an artisan’s work. It’s also one of the most popular pieces we’ve ever published… any guesses? The following Friday, we’ll be presenting a fun new profile in our Field Notes section by returning contributor Meredith Lawrence.
Craftsmanship Magazine is a not-for-profit, multimedia publication that focuses on master artisans and innovators whose work informs our quest: to create a world built to last. On our website, you’ll find a rich archive of in-depth reported features, audio stories, photo essays, Field Notes, and documentary shorts—along with community resources like our Artisans’ Directory, our guide to U.S.-based craft & folk schools, and much more—all free of charge, and free of ads.
Thank you for sharing our post! <3
