We're growing! Thanks to our Substack community...
Here's what's happening this week—and what's coming next—here on Craftsmanship.

Hello Substack Readers & Fans,
Thank you for joining us! Many of our new subscribers found us directly through Substack shares and referrals, which is exciting to see. We typically release a newsletter on Fridays highlighting our feature of the week; the occasional midweek Note; and, starting next week, a shorter newsletter offering on Wednesdays. But first, we’d like to take a moment to thank our many longtime supporters, welcome our new friends, and briefly introduce (or reintroduce) our mission and work.
Craftsmanship Magazine, founded in 2015 by Todd Oppenheimer, our publisher and editor-in-chief, is a not-for-profit, all-digital multimedia publication that focuses on master artisans and innovators whose work informs our quest: to create a world built to last.
On our website, you’ll find a rich archive of in-depth reported features, audio stories, photo essays, Field Notes, and documentary shorts—along with community resources like our Artisans’ Directory, our guide to U.S.-based craft & folk schools, and more—all free of ads and free of charge.
We moved our newsletters to Substack almost two years ago, and have been slowly migrating more of our content over here. It’s been heartening to experience such a positive response from this community—we even earned a Substack “Featured Publication” badge in 2023.
We’re still growing our offerings, and we’d love to hear what you think, as well as any suggestions you may have for us. Please leave us a comment if you’re so inclined, or send us an email at publisher@craftsmanship.net.
In the meantime, here’s what we have on offer this week:
ICYMI: Our latest Friday feature, "Real Film Strikes Back," written by David Munro, leads us on a fast, fun, behind-the-scenes tour of movie-making, and dives bravely into the “analog vs. digital” debate. An audio version can be found on our website, or wherever you like to get your podcasts.
This week in our Notes section, you can leave a comment for writer and independent filmmaker Dave Munro, or for our publisher, Todd Oppenheimer. Dave is standing by to chat about the Oscars, “Oppenheimer” (the movie, not the publisher), and the enduring allure of celluloid.
Coming this Friday, “The Secrets of Mastery” returns with a new episode featuring master woodworker, teacher, and author Gary Rogowoski (also the director of The Northwest Woodworking School). This week, Gary will discuss the value of handmade work in the age of global manufacturing. You can learn more about the series below.
Thank you again for reading and sharing our stories, for supporting our work with a paid subscription, if you can, and for being such a loyal part of the Craftsmanship community. We couldn’t do this without you.
Sincerely,
The Craftsmanship Team
