Summer vacation is over... and we're back!

Our new Fall issue will launch next Friday, Sept. 16. In the meantime, we hope you'll enjoy our latest podcast episode, "Shrine and the Art of Resilience."

Dear Friends,

As the summer season winds down, so does our semi-annual publishing hiatus. We’re back in the office this week with renewed energy and focus, polishing up the first stories of the upcoming Fall issue, which we’ll start rolling out a week from today.

In the meantime, we offer you the new audio version of “Shrine and the Art of Resilience,” written by Melinda Misuraca and narrated by Lindsay Scherbarth. This uplifting tale is only about 12 minutes long, but it packs in a lot of good questions about the role of art—and art-making—in times of extreme change and upheaval. As with all of our podcasts, you can play or download it directly from our pages, or from popular streaming services such as Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and Spotify. You can also read the original story on our site.

Please tune in next week for the first story of our special Fall issue, which will focus on Native American craft in the Southwest. We’ll also have a few new stories on other topics—and a new mini-documentary film—so that there’s something for everyone. In the meantime, I hope you will always find something intriguing to read—or watch, or listen to—within our pages. We welcome your thoughts via email, as well as on FacebookInstagram, or Twitter. Thank you for reading and sharing our stories, for donating to our cause when you can, and for being such a loyal part of the Craftsmanship community.

Sincerely,

Todd Oppenheimer
Editor & Publisher, Craftsmanship Quarterly

With our home state of California in the throes of a record-breaking heatwave this week, on top of an increasingly serious drought, we’re reflecting on some of the solutions-oriented stories we’ve published on sustainable water management—like “The New Water Alchemists,” written by Judith D. Schwartz and “Acequias and the Hydraulic Genius of Shari’ah Law,” by Roberto Lovato.

If you’re new to our pages, you can find these stories and more using the Topic Search function in our free Archives. (And if you enjoy listening to podcasts, many of these past stories have audio versions, too.)
